About

Mark Collins

Think of your reaction when you come upon a scene that draws your attention completely–one of those visual moments that is fleeting but seems to be locked in time – an instant when the colors, the light and the objects in front of you  come together in an arrangement containing both structure and energy.  This is what I like to paint;  these are the themes and subjects that I explore in my artwork.

My paintings (oil on canvas) and drawings (pencil and charcoal) are built on the formal elements and in particular strong representations of light.  I am also interested in developing the relationships between shapes within a composition as well as depicting strong value and color contrasts.

As a native of rural New York, I have always loved painting landscapes.  I studied art education at American University in Washington, DC and have been teaching art to high school students for 17 years.  Living in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Evanston, Illinois, and Granada, Spain has given me the opportunity to explore landscapes and cityscapes as well as the beautiful, crisp light found in arid climates.  I have exhibited my work in galleries and shows throughout the Chicago area. My paintings are a part of private collections in New York, Massachusetts, Virginia, Wyoming, Connecticut, Chicago, Colorado, Madrid, and Granada, Spain.
